Shabab Al Ahli’s superiority over Iranian Sepahan in performance and result is a confirmation of the club’s superiority over Iranian clubs in the history of their previous encounters, as Shabab Al Ahli is the best Emirati team to achieve results against Iranian clubs in the AFC Champions League, where it played 17 matches against them, winning 9 of them, drawing 5 matches and losing 3, scoring 26 goals while conceding 20 goals.
This victory transferred Shabab Al Ahli to face its brother Al Gharafa of Qatar on the 13th of this month, in an anticipated and important encounter for the two sister clubs, because victory transfers its owner to the elite championship, so will the Knights continue to win?
We stand here and remember in a historical return to the encounters of our football teams with their Iranian counterparts, as unforgettable scenes brought us together, as in the early seventies the first local team played there under the name of the Dubai national team, and the team was formed with the support of His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of Al Wasl Club, and the best players at that stage were chosen from the teams in the Deira and Bur Dubai teams.
The sea voyage began with the large sambuq “Zabeel” and the team went to Bandar Abbas port and were officially received. The governor and the mayor were waiting for them. After that, the Minister of Education arrived and watched some of the matches. We played three matches, tied in one match and lost two. It was a useful experience for us in the first foreign mission for our football teams. At the beginning of 1973, the UAE embassy was opened and the ambassador’s mission was taken over by Sheikh Hasher Al Maktoum, along with two football stars, the late Ali Al Badour and Younis Mohammed Noor. The three were players on the Dubai youth team in the sixties. The three were classmates at Dubai High School. The late Abdul Aziz Ismail joined them, and he was nominated by the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs during the days of the late Saif Ghobash. This was the first UAE embassy in Tehran. As for the football team, our national team camped in Iran before the third Gulf Cup in Kuwait in 1974. We played three matches there and the late Ghanem Ghobash headed the delegation. According to the program set by the team coach, the late Shehata, it was scheduled to play four matches, but the fourth was cancelled due to heavy snow. As the camp lasted only one week, these are some of the unforgettable memories. Our representative’s last match reminded us of some of the situations so that we can present them to the different generations today, including athletes, media professionals, players, and others, so that they know the history of football and how tiring and difficult the sport was and how it has become. Unfortunately, we lack documentation, so it is our duty to remember it for today’s generations. And God is behind the intention.
