As the world celebrates World Radio Day, let us pause for a moment at the role of radio in our lives and how we have learned and benefited from it in a way that has changed our awareness and cultural journey.
The journey of radio in the country began before television broadcasting, through individual and official attempts. The first individual attempts were in 1958 in Dubai, through the late Saqr Majid Al Marri. It bore the name Dubai Radio from Al Shindagha, and it broadcast for an hour daily, and the first radio stations began. The official broadcast with Sawt Al Sahel Radio from Sharjah (1964 – 1970), which was established by the Development Office emanating from the Council of Rulers of the Trucial States. It began broadcasting in 1964, and stopped broadcasting in 1970 to be replaced on the same frequency by Radio Dubai, and among the broadcasters who worked on Sawt Radio Coast D. Ahmed Amin Al-Madani, who holds the first doctorate in the country’s history, and Khalfan Al-Murr, Saber Muhammad, Ahmed Al-Mansouri, Saeed Al-Hash, Muhammad Al-Khoury, Saqr Al-Marri, and others, as Dubai Radio replaced “Sawt Al-Sahel” Radio, which stopped broadcasting, and the broadcast headquarters was a building Current radio and television, and among the local voices that emerged were Abdul Ghafour Al-Sayyed, Saeed Al-Hash, and Saleh Buhumaid. During this period, the radio was active in transmitting sporting events, especially football. It transmitted many important football events that the country witnessed, the most prominent of which was the match between Santos and Brazil, led by Pele in front of Al-Nasr in 1973, as well as other meetings that took place between our local teams with the Egyptian Ismaily and Al-Ahly in 1969 and 1974, and were broadcast through the voice of the Egyptian commentator Abdel Moneim Radwan. He was a teacher in the morning at Dubai High School and in the evening a secretary of the Dubai Football Association, and during sporting events he commented on… The matches were broadcast on the radio. Radio was dear to my heart, as it was associated with the second Arabian Gulf Cup competitions that took place in Riyadh in March 1972. I was attached to the voices of the commentators. These are historical and unforgettable moments. And God is behind the intention.
