The BMW Group is sharing its vision for the future digital experience at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2023 in Las Vegas.
The new BMW i Vision Dee mid-size sedan embodies a new, concise design language. The name “Dee” stands for Digital Emotional Experience, which aims to create a stronger bond between people and their cars of the future.
The digital functions of the future will go beyond the level of voice control and driver assistance systems we know today. The BMW Head-Up-Display stretches across the full width of the windshield, providing a glimpse into the next generation of cars. From 2025 onwards, this innovation will be available on NEUE KLASSE models.
The BMW Group has also improved its use of color change technology. After unveiling the BMW iX Flow Feature E Ink, with the ability to change from black to white, at CES recently, the BMW i Vision Dee can now coordinate its exterior with up to 32 colours.
Oliver Zipes, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG, said: “With the BMW i Vision Dee, we are showing what is possible when hardware and software are combined. In this way, we can exploit the full potential of digitalization to turn the car into an intelligent companion. Adding, “This is the future for car manufacturers – And also for BMW: the fusion of virtual experience with real driving pleasure.” “At the same time, the BMW i Vision Dee is another step on the road to NEUE KLASSE.
With this vision, we look far into the future and underscore the enormous importance of digitization for our next product generations.”
With its intelligent and human-like capabilities, the BMW i Vision Dee accompanies drivers not only in real-life road situations, but also in their digital environment.
“The BMW lives on through its unparalleled digital performance.
“The BMW i Vision Dee is all about the perfect integration of virtual and physical experiences,” said Frank Weber, Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG responsible for development. “Anyone who excels at integrating the customer’s everyday digital worlds into the vehicle at all levels will succeed in mastering the future of automotive building.”
Together with the advanced head-up display, the BMW Mixed Reality Slider is the highlight of the digital and central operating control in the BMW i Vision Dee. Using shy tech sensors on the dashboard, drivers can decide for themselves how much digital content they want to see on the advanced head-up display.
Where the skipper can make a five-step selection from analogue, to driving-related information, to the contents of the communication system, to augmented reality projection, all the way to entering virtual worlds. In parallel, dimmable windows can also be used to gradually obscure reality. Mixed reality in the BMW i Vision Dee can be experienced in an immersive way that engages different senses without the need for any additional tools, creating a new dimension of driving pleasure for the user.
The BMW Group is known in the automotive sector as a pioneer in the head-up display and has systematically improved this technology over the past two decades. The BMW i Vision Dee model enables you to project the entirety of information through the windshield onto the largest possible surface – which can only be recognized as a head-up display once activated. In this way, the BMW Group demonstrates the enormous potential of display technology, and BMW i Vision Dee envisions how an advanced head-up display can also be used in the future for display and operation concept.
The standard production version of BMW’s head-up display across the entire width of the windshield will be used in the NEUE Klasse models from 2025 onwards.
We welcome you
With a welcome scenario with sound and physics symbols, the digital experience actually begins outside the vehicle. The model includes a personalized welcome system that combines graphic elements, lighting and sound effects. Where natural language acts as the simplest and most accessible form of interaction, allowing perfect understanding between humans and their vehicles. The headlights and closed BMW grille also form a common symbol (a fusion of physical and digital) on a unified surface, allowing the car to produce different facial expressions. This means that the BMW i Vision Dee can speak to people and visually express moods such as joy, surprise or approval at the same time. The BMW i Vision Dee can also display a driver avatar on the side window to personalize the welcome scenario.
After the stunning debut of the BMW iX Flow featuring e-ink at CES 2022, the BMW Group is now unveiling a full-color version of the E Ink technology in the BMW i Vision Dee that will be used as leather. The exterior of the car for the first time around the world.
Instead of just switching between black and white, the BMW i Vision Dee offers a multi-colour, fully variable and individually configurable exterior. An ePaper from the BMW Group, E Ink, is applied to the exterior to create a magical color display of up to 32 colours. Different.
The surface of the BMW i Vision Dee’s body is divided into 240 electronic ink sections, each of which is individually controlled. This allows an infinite variety and variety of patterns to be created in a matter of seconds.
The laser cutting process used to cut the films and the electronic control design were developed in partnership with E Ink. It includes adapting the technology to curved surfaces and programming animations by in-house engineers at the BMW Group, to enable a unique form of personalization across the worldwide automotive sector.
