Emirati players Omar Al Suwaidi and Zayed Al Shamsi won two precious golds for the Emirates in the professional competitions of the Abu Dhabi Grand Slam Jiu-Jitsu Championship in the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro, which was held over the last three days, with the participation of more than 2,500 male and female players from various countries of the world. Their colleague Saeed Al Kubaisi won the silver medal in the same tournament, the third day of which was dedicated to the professional category.
The competitions were held over the three days at the Carioca Arena in Rio de Janeiro, with the participation of elite professional players, masters, and juniors from around the world.
The closing day witnessed the crowning of professional champions holding purple, brown and black belts. The Brazil tour, organized by the Abu Dhabi Association of Jiu-Jitsu Professionals (AJP), is considered one of the largest tours of the season in terms of the number of participants in total, the number of elite black belt champions, as well as the large public presence over the three days, and at the level of academies, the UAE had a strong presence in Leading positions for the professional category, where “Commando Group” Academy succeeded in achieving second place, while “MOD” Academy came in third place.
Tariq Al Bahri, Director General of the Abu Dhabi Association of Jiu-Jitsu Professionals (AJP), said: A major achievement added to the process of the Abu Dhabi Grand Slam Jiu-Jitsu Championship, as our efforts in Rio de Janeiro culminated in the crowning of three champions from the Emirates in the professional category, which reflects our commitment and keenness to advance this sport to new heights. The success of this round coincides with our celebration of the tenth anniversary of the launch of the tournament, and it is a true embodiment of the vision that we have set from the beginning.
He added: “I thank our friends in Brazil, as the UAE-Brazilian relations have contributed greatly to the development of competitions and raising the level of players. We are certain that this fruitful partnership will continue to support us to achieve more successes in the upcoming rounds, and we will always strive to provide the best in every new season.”
Regarding winning the gold medal, the Emirati champion, Omar Al Suwaidi, said: “Representing my country in a major tournament like the Abu Dhabi Grand Slam in Rio de Janeiro gives me a feeling of responsibility towards my country and encourages me more to achieve my best performance, so that I can raise the name of the Emirates high in all forums.”
