“Al Wadhi” is the official mascot of the Judo World Cup – Abu Dhabi 2024
Mohammed bin Thaloub Al Darei: We proudly display all components of Emirati society to the world
The organization announced the official mascot of the World Judo Championship – Abu Dhabi 2024, “Al-Wadhihi”, which is the Arabian Oryx, as part of the promotional campaign as the countdown continues to the start of the next event in the United Arab Emirates, with the participation of the world’s strongest male and female players in this Olympic sport. During the period from May 19 to 24, at the Mubadala Arena, Abu Dhabi.
The organizing committee chose the Arabian oryx because of its connection to the United Arab Emirates, and because it is one of its famous natural symbols, in addition to the fact that it has become a symbol of environmental sustainability in which the country is making pioneering steps globally, after the UAE’s efforts had previously contributed to the return of the Arabian oryx, one of the animals. The rare item after its disappearance for more than 40 years, thanks to the “Arabian Oryx Breeding” project, which the state adopted since the time of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, may God have mercy on him. There are now thousands of them living in Abu Dhabi.
As for the choice of the name “Al-Wadhai”, it is one of the well-known names for the oryx gazelle, a rare and powerful animal that largely inhabits the deserts of the Arabian Peninsula, among other regions. It was called Al-Wadhi, due to its intense, clear whiteness.
The organizing committee adopted the design of the mascot, which proudly carries the flag of the United Arab Emirates on its judo suit, and wears a black belt, which indicates that it has reached the highest levels of professionalism in this sport, as the Arabian oryx is known for its straight horns and white color, and is also known for its beauty. They are agile, and they are also distinguished by their strong vision, as they can see their enemies from long distances, and they are very sensitive animals, so they sense any changes that occur around them, or when a stranger enters their area.
Commenting on the launch of the official mascot of the tournament, His Excellency Mohammed bin Thaloub Al Darei, Chairman of the Supreme Organizing Committee of the World Judo Championship – 2024, and President of the Emirates Judo Federation, said: “One of the most important goals that we seek to achieve by hosting this event is to highlight the components of Emirati society. And our symbols, proudly in front of the whole world, with competitions broadcast on television screens and social networking sites on all continents, which is what made us choose the Arabian Oryx “Al-Wadhihi” gazelle, which has a special connection with us here and the region of the Arabian Peninsula, and it reflects the story of great efforts. The UAE has made efforts to preserve it, as it is a rare animal, in addition to its physical and sensory capabilities, which make it an example for using it to promote sporting activity with qualities related to physical strength, courage, and intelligence.”
He added: “Al-Wadhihi will be present in the various promotional aspects of the upcoming World Championship in Abu Dhabi, through social media, and at the tournament site itself by interacting with the fans who are expected to attend from inside and outside the country to watch the brightest stars in the world competing in the biggest event before the Games.” Olympic next summer.
