The Supreme Committee stated that more than 173 tons of materials made of polyester, which were used in the form of promotional materials, barriers, and others during the world championship, are currently being recycled in a factory in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, which specializes in developing innovative and sustainable solutions, to convert such waste into material. raw materials for new industries.
In her statement about the project; Bodour, Executive Director of the Sustainability Department at the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy, said: “One of the most important challenges facing the organizers of major sporting events in the past is how to dispose of the polyester materials used during the event in an environmentally friendly manner. Therefore, we were keen to research into The best sustainable solutions to overcome this problem.”
She added: “These efforts led us to cooperate with the Saudi Summit Plastic Factory, and we are pleased with our partnership with the factory, which helps us recycle tons of materials that were usually thrown into landfills. This enhances the status of the Qatar World Cup 2022 as a milestone in terms of sustainability in major sports leagues.”

The Saudi Summit Plastic Factory, based in the capital, Riyadh, is the closest industrial facility specialized in recycling polyester, to undertake the task of converting the polyester used in the Qatar World Cup 2022 into a raw material from which new plastic products are made.
After the curtain fell on the championship competitions last December; These materials were transported to Saudi Arabia with the close cooperation of suppliers, logistics partners and customs authorities in the two countries. The factory is now continuing to convert these materials into recyclable plastic products.
It is noteworthy that the recycling of materials made of polyester that were used during the World Cup is part of many environmental projects for the World Cup, and the work teams organizing the tournament succeeded in recycling approximately 80% of the waste resulting from the organization of the tournament, while the remaining percentage was transferred to a waste conversion plant. into energy.
