The FIFA amendments to classify teams are as follows:
* Team A gets 1300 pre-match points and wins a continental qualification match against Team B who has 1500 points
* For Team A, the formula is: P = 1300 + 25 * (1– (1 / (10 exp (- (1300–1500) / 600) +1))
* For team B, the formula is: P = 1500 + 25 * (0- (1 / (10 exp (- (1500-1300) / 600) + 1))
* Thus, team A earns 17 points and has P = 1317 points after the match.
* Team B loses the same amount of points and thus ends with 1483 points after the match.
On the other hand, FIFA classifies tournaments and friendlies in terms of importance, as the result is combined with the expected results to determine the percentage of points to be awarded to the teams as follows:
* 5 – Friendly matches that are played outside the windows of the international matches calendar.
* 10 – Friendly matches played within the windows of the international matches calendar.
* 15 – European Nations League matches (group stage).
* 25 – European Nations League matches (qualifiers and finals), final qualifiers for continental competitions, FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
* 35 – Confederations Finals matches (before the quarter-finals).
* 40 – Confederations Finals (Quarter-finals and beyond)
* 50: World Cup matches (before the quarter-finals).
* 60: World Cup matches (quarter-finals, semi-finals, third place, play-offs and finals).
