The most beautiful days for journalism are this May, as we mark World Press Freedom Day, celebrated worldwide. On this occasion, we express our confidence and complete joy that the media, including journalism, is the primary tool for influence and reform in any society. It is also a double-edged sword, but the ultimate goal is to deliver a media message that conveys news and presents honest opinions.
The United Nations General Assembly, at its first meeting, decided that “freedom of information is a fundamental human right and the cornerstone of all the freedoms advocated by the United Nations.” The public’s right to knowledge and access to information is considered one of the most important pillars of democratic development for any country in the world. In May, Dar Al Bayan Press and Publishing was launched, and today it represents a significant milestone in the history of local journalism. The turnout of visitors to Al Bayan’s stand at the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair demonstrates the newspaper’s pioneering status, cementing its position on the region’s newspaper map. We are delighted to write for it, read it, and see it in the hands of readers. Our happiness is doubled. That’s why we remember May with fondness, as it marks a historic occasion for all members of the Al Bayan family: its annual anniversary. Now, it’s reaching its 45th anniversary, which it celebrates without fanfare. Work is our motto, and my focus here is on sports journalism, as the occasion means a lot to its members. It’s a beautiful coincidence that it coincides with World Press Freedom Day, as May remains the month of journalism. We are all happy because we work together. Our goal is to advance media through objectivity and credibility, while emphasizing national identity. I believe that sports today have a greater impact on society… and God knows best.
